WhatsApp Simplifies Backup Security with Passkey Encryption
WhatsApp is enhancing the security and convenience of chat backups with the introduction of passkey-encrypted backups. This update replaces the previous system of passwords or complex 64-digit keys with a more user-friendly method leveraging a phone’s existing security features.
previously, users opting for end-to-end encrypted backups faced the challenge of managing and remembering these credentials. The new system links backups directly to a device’s built-in security, utilizing methods like fingerprint, Face ID, or screen lock for protection. This means the same authentication used to unlock a phone or authorize payments will now secure whatsapp backups.
Once activated, the passkey encryption feature ties the backup to the device’s authentication system. This allows users to restore their chats, photos, and voice notes simply by unlocking their device when reinstalling WhatsApp or switching to a new phone, eliminating the need to recall forgotten passwords or keys. Importantly, WhatsApp and cloud providers like google Drive or iCloud retain no access to the encrypted messages. The system maintains end-to-end encryption throughout the process.
This integration of trusted biometric systems offers a notable improvement in security without adding complexity. It addresses the common issue of users being locked out of their backups due to lost credentials, providing both peace of mind and ease of use.
The feature is currently rolling out globally and can be enabled within WhatsApp’s settings: Settings → Chats → Chat backup → End-to-end encrypted backup. This update aims to seamlessly blend security and simplicity for all WhatsApp users, ensuring their messages and media remain protected and accessible.
Summary:
WhatsApp is rolling out passkey-encrypted backups, replacing passwords and 64-digit keys with phone-based authentication like fingerprint or Face ID. The new system securely links backups to device credentials, ensuring end-to-end encryption while simplifying access. Globally launching soon, it combines strong privacy with effortless usability for all WhatsApp users.
