Western Pennsylvania Awaits Trump‘s Next U.S. Attorney Pick
Pittsburgh, PA – The position of U.S.Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania remains unfilled months into President Trump’s second term, leaving a key federal law enforcement role in the region vacant and prompting speculation about potential nominees. the delay is unusual, as previous administrations typically announced thier selections shortly after taking office.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania is responsible for federal criminal prosecutions and civil litigation across 26 counties, impacting everything from drug trafficking and white-collar crime to national security matters. The office plays a crucial role in public safety and upholding the law throughout Western Pennsylvania. Currently, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Kaufman is serving as the acting U.S. Attorney, a temporary role with limitations. The search for a permanent replacement has been ongoing as early 2023, following the departure of former U.S. Attorney Scott Brady. A list of potential nominees was submitted to the White House by Pennsylvania Republican Party leaders in the fall of 2023, but no decision has been announced. Names circulating include those of state Sen. Devlin Robinson, westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli, and attorney Tim Stevens.
“If we got into 2026 and there are very few additional nominations, that would surprise me,” said Erin Yudt, a reporter with Next Generation Newsroom, indicating an expectation of further developments in the selection process.
The prolonged vacancy raises concerns among legal observers about potential disruptions to ongoing investigations and the overall effectiveness of federal law enforcement in the region. While the office continues to function under Kaufman’s leadership, a permanent U.S. Attorney would bring stability and a clear vision for the office’s priorities. The appointment requires presidential nomination and Senate confirmation.
