Vingegaard to challenge Evenepoel at european Championships in First Pro Selection for Denmark
Jonas Vingegaard, fresh off his victory in the Vuelta a España, will compete at the European Championships in early October, adding a formidable challenger to reigning champion Remco Evenepoel. This marks the first time Vingegaard will represent Denmark at the European Championships as a professional cyclist.
The Danish team, announced today, also includes Mattias Skjelmose – another strong contender on climbing courses – and Mads Pedersen, who will focus on the time trial event. Denmark’s national coach, Michael Mørkøv, has expressed a clear ambition to secure the European title, citing Vingegaard and Skjelmose as key assets for a challenging course featuring repeated climbs.
The European championship road race will be held on a course with two significant climbs: a 6.5km climb with an average gradient of 7.5% repeated three times, and a 1.5km climb with an average gradient of 10% repeated five times. Vingegaard opted to skip the World championships in Rwanda to focus on this event.
“These are challenges that are suitable for the light and explosive riders,” Mørkøv stated. “We are privileged to have such riders, especially with Jonas Vingegaard and Mattias Skjelmose. We have a strong team around them and our clear ambition is to become a European champion.”
