New Tariffs⁢ on‌ Japanese Automobiles⁣ and Auto Parts Take Effect Upon Federal Register Publication

Washington D.C. – New ‌tariff rules governing imports ‍from Japan, particularly impacting the automotive sector,⁤ will be implemented immediately upon publication of a notice⁢ in the Federal Register. The changes stem from‌ a recent Executive Order enacting the United States-Japan Agreement, altering duties previously governed by Proclamation 10908 ⁤- the March‍ 2025 Section 232 ‌tariffs on automobiles and auto ⁤parts.

The agreement⁣ adjusts ‍how ⁤tariffs are calculated for Japanese automobiles and auto⁢ parts. Previously subject to Section 232 tariffs, these goods will⁢ now follow a new structure: the duty rate will be determined by the product’s Column 1 Duty Rate in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the⁢ united States (HTSUS).⁣ If the Column 1 rate is ‍less than 15%, ⁣a combined duty of ⁢that rate plus 15% will be applied. ⁤If the Column 1 rate ⁢is 15% or higher, no additional duty‍ will be ⁣assessed. Unlike other provisions of ⁣the Executive Order, these⁢ changes are not retroactive.

For all other products from Japan entering or being withdrawn ‌for consumption,‌ the ‌new tariff rules ⁣are effective as ⁣of ⁢today. Refunds for any overpayments‌ made ‍under the prior tariff‍ structure will‌ be processed through standard Customs and Border protection (CBP) procedures.

Further ⁢details are ⁣available in the full Executive Order: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/09/implementing-the-united-states-japan-agreement/.Importers and‍ businesses impacted by these changes are ‍encouraged to contact their⁤ Western overseas⁤ representative with⁢ any⁣ questions.
