Global Studios Japan Warns Against Inappropriate Halloween Costumes Following Risqué Photos
Osaka, Japan – Universal Studios Japan (USJ) has issued a warning to visitors regarding costumes worn during its annual Halloween Horror Nights event, following the circulation of photographs depicting revealing outfits at the park. The declaration, made via USJ’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on May 16, 2024, reiterates existing guidelines prohibiting costumes deemed excessively revealing or disruptive.
The park’s statement comes after images surfaced online of a guest posing in a bondage-inspired outfit incorporating elements from the Super Mario Bros. franchise - specifically Bowser horns and the Super Crown item – at various locations within USJ. This incident echoes previous controversies, including one in 2022 where a woman’s social media posts featuring attire considered overly revealing sparked the term “Shitagi Uniba” (Underwear USJ) in Japan. USJ previously issued similar statements addressing costume concerns during past Halloween Horror Nights events.
Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios parks, including the USJ location, allows guests to attend in costume. However, USJ’s guidelines explicitly prohibit costumes that expose excessive skin, are excessively suggestive, or may otherwise disrupt the experience for other guests. The park reserves the right to deny entry or ask guests to modify costumes that violate these rules. The event is scheduled to run from September 6 to November 3, 2024.
