Twin Cities Brace for Dramatic Temperature swing, Stormy Monday Commute
The Twin Cities are experiencing a stark shift in weather conditions, trading last Sunday’s unusually cool temperatures for a heat wave culminating in potential thunderstorms during Monday morning’s rush hour. After a low of 44 degrees and a high of 64 degrees on September 7th, residents will see highs near 90 degrees today, September 14th.
This rapid warm-up is a significant departure from the average for this time of year, with a typical low of 55 degrees and a high of 74 degrees. While the current forecast doesn’t threaten the record high of 98 degrees set in 1939, the heat index is expected to climb into the low 90s due to high humidity, with dew point temperatures in the upper 60s. The change impacts anyone planning outdoor activities and commuters facing potential disruptions Monday.
Today will be partly cloudy, hot, and humid, with southeast winds at 5 to 15 mph. Tonight, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop after 3 a.m., moving north and impacting the Twin Cities during the Monday morning commute between 3 a.m. and 10 a.m. Lows overnight will be near 70 degrees, with southeast winds at 5 to 10 mph, potentially gusting higher near the storms.
Monday will begin with scattered thunderstorms and clouds, clearing to partly cloudy skies in the afternoon with highs in the low to mid 80s and breezy south winds at 10 to 20 mph. Patchy fog is absolutely possible Monday night, with lows in the upper 60s.
Tuesday will remain partly cloudy, hot, and humid, with highs again in the upper 80s and heat index values in the low 90s. Isolated thunderstorms are possible Tuesday evening, with lows in the upper 60s.
Looking ahead, Wednesday will start partly cloudy before becoming cloudy with scattered thunderstorms, some potentially strong, in the afternoon and evening. Highs will be in the low 80s. Thursday and Friday will bring cooler conditions with highs in the low 70s and low to mid 60s,respectively,along with scattered showers and thunderstorms.
The weekend of September 20th and 21st is forecast to begin with a mix of clouds and sun on saturday, with spotty showers and highs in the upper 60s, followed by partly cloudy skies on Sunday with highs also in the upper 60s.
