Opera de Montréal’s Jenůfa Prioritizes Janáček‘s Score,Despite Unconventional Staging
MONTREAL – Opera de Montréal’s current production of Leoš Janáček’s Jenůfa-with performances continuing November 27 and 30 at the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier-draws attention for its striking,if divisive, visual interpretation, but ultimately succeeds due to the enduring power of Janáček’s music and the precision of the Orchestre Métropolitain. The production, which premiered earlier this month, presents a decidedly modern take on the rural drama, sparking discussion among attendees.
While debra Hanson’s costumes effectively evoke a countryside setting, the staging departs substantially from traditional depictions of the Buryja family’s mill. Director chose a half-sphere resembling a partially consumed bagel in place of the mill, creating a science fiction-esque atmosphere. Despite this unconventional choice, the production underscores the essential role of Janáček’s composition and the faithfulness to the original text.
“The reader will have understood that Janáček’s music is certainly worth the detour. And that’s what we prefer to remember,” a review noted, highlighting the production’s strength. Tickets are available at https://operademontreal.com/programmes/jenufa.
