Reinhard Mey Mourns Son Maximilian,Years After Tragic death
Berlin – German singer-songwriter Reinhard Mey continues to grapple with the loss of his son,Maximilian,who died in 2014 following a five-year coma induced by severe pneumonia. The revelation of the illness’s severity – involving three different germs – came during a 2009 appearance on the talk show “Beckmann,” while Maximilian was already in a vegetative state for six months.
Mey, known for hits like “The murderer is always the gardener” and ”Above the clouds,” has spoken openly about the profound impact of his son’s death. Maximilian, than 27, collapsed unexpectedly and required resuscitation. Tests revealed no presence of drugs or alcohol in his system, according to Mey’s account on “Beckmann.” The tragedy unfolded over years of worry and ultimately, helplessness for Mey and his wife, Hella.
In 2013, Mey poignantly foreshadowed the impending loss in a song dedicated to his son, titled ”Then do it well.” A verse from the song reads: “If he appeared before me again from the twilight, I would hold him with both arms, my precious cargo.”
Mey finds solace in cherished memories. “The thoughts of him, the pictures, the laughter” remain vivid, he shared with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.” he expresses a belief that Maximilian watches over them, often “laughing his ass off at us.”
Reinhard Mey, one of Germany’s most successful songwriters, also achieved recognition in France under the pseudonym Frédérik Mey. His enduring musical legacy continues alongside the deeply personal grief of losing his son.
