Pediatricians Key to Early Myopia Detection & Management, Expert Says
Rome, Italy – Pediatricians are uniquely positioned to identify and address childhood vision problems, particularly myopia (nearsightedness), according to Rino Agostiniani, President of the italian Society of Paediatrics (Sip). Speaking at a recent event in Rome focused on pediatric myopia, Agostiniani emphasized the pediatrician’s crucial role as a primary point of contact for families.
Currently, a key challenge lies in bridging the gap between a pediatrician’s initial identification of a potential vision issue and a swift, complete management plan developed with an ophthalmologist. agostiniani noted that while guidelines exist for pediatricians to assess visual acuity during routine check-ups, the implementation of these skills varies.
“The pediatrician can be the fundamental element to encourage a change in lifestyle,” Agostiniani stated, highlighting the importance of preventative measures. He specifically recommended increased time spent outdoors and reduced screen time, especially during critical eye growth stages.
Triumphant management also relies on informed and engaged families. Raising awareness among parents about potential vision problems is vital, and pediatricians are well-placed to facilitate this. Ultimately, Agostiniani believes a collaborative approach – involving pediatricians, ophthalmologists, and families – is essential for timely diagnosis and effective management of myopia in children.
