Orlando Bloom Expresses hesitation Over Recasting of Legolas in Upcoming ‘Lord of the Rings’ Project
Actor Orlando Bloom has voiced his reluctance to see another performer take on the role of Legolas, the iconic Elven character he portrayed in The Lord of the Rings and The hobbit trilogies. Bloom shared his thoughts during an appearance on the Today show, stating, “I’d hate to see anyone else play Legolas, you know what I mean?”
The comments come as Amazon prepares to move forward with The Hunt for Gollum, a new film set within the Lord of the Rings universe. While Bloom confirmed he has “not heard a peep” regarding casting for the role of Legolas, his statement reflects a sentiment shared by other original cast members regarding potential reboots or continuations of their characters. Sir Ian McKellen previously indicated openness to reprising his role as Gandalf, contingent on his health, and Viggo Mortensen has expressed willingness to return as Aragorn if the timing and circumstances are appropriate.
Bloom acknowledged the evolving possibilities within filmmaking, noting, “with AI, they can do anything these days!” despite his personal preference for maintaining the original cast association with the beloved characters. The Rings of Power, a prequel series, is confirmed to return for a third season on Amazon Prime video, with filming expected to begin soon following the conclusion of its second season in October 2024.
