New Zealand Lion Park Euthanises Two Big Cats Amid Financial Struggles
Auckland, New Zealand - Two lions at a troubled New Zealand wildlife park have been euthanised due to ”serious health conditions that were not treatable and were deteriorating,” according to a statement from the sanctuary. The park, formerly known as Zion Wildlife Gardens, has faced decades of financial difficulties and controversy.
The decision was made after the park’s final weekend of trade, with property owners Bolton Equities initially considering euthanising all seven big cats. Park operator Janette Vallance stated the animals were between 18 and 21 years old, leaving “no real options left.”
Following public backlash and pleas for relocation, the park investigated alternatives but persistent relocation was “not a viable or humane option” due to the lions’ age and “complex needs.” Vallance noted a ”glimmer of hope” with potential buyers expressing interest in continuing care for the remaining five lions, stating they are “doing everything we can to explore this possibility and keep hope alive.”
New Zealand’s Ministry for primary Industries (MPI) confirmed the decision rests with the owners and that they were informed of the plan.
The park initially gained prominence as the setting for a reality television program featuring its founder, Craig Busch, known as the “Lion Man.” in 2009, a zoo keeper was fatally mauled by a rare white tiger, leading to health and safety charges and NZ$60,000 (£26,000) in reparations to the family.
Bolton Equities took ownership in 2014 after the MPI closed the park for failing to meet animal enclosure requirements. It reopened in 2021 but entered involuntary liquidation in 2023.
