Comeback? Not with Manuel Neuer! Football Legend Excludes DFB Return

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has definitively ruled out a return to the national team, dashing hopes for a potential World Cup appearance. “All of Germany can ask him – but he said no,” stated Lothar Matthäus, according to reports.

The news comes as Germany prepares for upcoming qualification games, with Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen sidelined after a back operation and potentially facing a reserve role at his club. Neuer, 39, had previously ended his international career after the 2023 European Championship. Despite recent strong performances following injury, Matthäus believes neuer has made his decision final, noting, “He had a trailer after his injury, but at the moment he plays world class again.”

Currently, Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann, 35, has been appointed number one by national coach Julian Nagelsmann. Baumann previously filled in for ter Stegen during his knee surgery, earning six caps in the Nations League. Ter Stegen’s ongoing recovery and potential demotion at Barcelona further solidify Baumann’s position as the leading contender for Germany’s goal.
