netflix Ends Casting From Mobile Devices to Moast TVs, Further Restricting Viewing Options
Netflix has discontinued support for casting content from mobile devices to teh majority of TVs and streaming devices, effectively forcing users to navigate the Netflix app directly on their television or streaming device. The change, announced by Netflix support, impacts how millions stream content and continues a pattern of the company limiting viewer-pleasant features.
While devices lacking a native Netflix app – such as older Chromecast models – will retain casting functionality, those with dedicated apps will now require direct app usage via a TV remote. This move arrives roughly three years after Netflix introduced restrictions on its ad-supported tier, preventing Google cast functionality - and therefore use on classic Chromecasts – unless subscribers upgrade to a premium plan starting at $17.99/month.
the shift is particularly notable as Netflix has a history of removing casting and integration options. In 2019, the company removed AirPlay support for iOS devices. More recently, in 2020, Netflix temporarily removed support for the Google TV app, though it has since been reinstated, while continuing to block Google’s Watchlist feature for five years.
This latest change impacts anyone accustomed to easily sending content from their phone to their TV, and signals Netflix’s increasing control over the viewing experience, prioritizing direct app engagement over flexible casting options.
