Retro Revival: A Look Back at the Rugged Fiat Panda 4×4 Sisley
A rare glimpse into automotive history is currently featured on Aktuálně.cz, spotlighting the Fiat Panda 4×4 Sisley – a vehicle conceived as a “modern farm car” in the early 1980s. The Panda 4×4, a surprisingly capable off-roader for its size, offered an affordable, simple, and easily maintained transportation solution, bridging the gap between urban practicality and rural necessity.
Launched in June 1983, the Panda 4×4 distinguished itself as the first small car to offer four-wheel drive. Powered by a 48-horsepower, 965cc engine sourced from the Autobianchi A112, it relied on components from Austrian firm Steyr-Puch for its clutch, differential, transmission, and brakes, with final assembly occurring in Termini Imerese, Italy. Automotive historian Jan Schavel notes the vehicle’s unique position, stating it could “only compete in the field with the Suzuki Samurai” due to its weight and drivetrain.
The model also featured a reinforced chassis to withstand the demands of off-road driving. A photograph accompanying the article, taken by Radim Kořínek, showcases the vehicle’s utilitarian design and enduring appeal. The Aktuálně.cz gallery offers a nostalgic look at a vehicle that challenged conventional automotive norms and remains a cult favorite among enthusiasts.
