Philadelphia health Officials Alert Public to Possible Measles Exposure at Airport
Philadelphia health officials are investigating a potential measles exposure at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), urging residents to take preventative measures. The possible exposure occurred recently, prompting a call for unvaccinated individuals who may have been at the airport to monitor for symptoms and take appropriate action.
Measles, a highly contagious viral illness, poses a risk notably to those not protected through vaccination or prior infection. This alert comes as cases of measles are increasing nationally and internationally, raising concerns about potential outbreaks. Health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination as the most effective way to prevent the spread of the disease.
Individuals who are protected from measles through vaccination or previous infection do not need to take any action. However, those who are not immune should receive a dose of the MMR vaccine and consult with their healthcare provider.
Those under 12 months of age, pregnant individuals who are not immune, and people with weakened immune systems are advised to contact their healthcare provider instantly for guidance.
Measles is contagious from four days before to four days after the rash appears. if you are not immune and believe you may have been exposed, health officials recommend wearing a mask in indoor public spaces and around unvaccinated individuals for three weeks following the potential exposure.
