McGill University to Upgrade Microscopy Facilities, Bolstering Research Capabilities
Montreal, QC – McGill University is embarking on a notable upgrade to its Facility for Electron Microscopy Research (FEMR), located within the Strathcona Anatomy and Dentistry Building. Construction firm Construction Bralteck has been contracted to complete Project 21-081 - CFI Ortega,a renovation project slated to begin October 12,2025,and conclude by December 23,2025.
The project will focus on modernizing laboratory spaces in rooms B/31, B/32B, B/27, and B/2F to house two cutting-edge microscopes: the Thermo Scientific Glacios 2 Cryo-TEM and the Hydra Bio plasma FIB-SEM (PFIB).These instruments represent a substantial investment in the universityS research infrastructure and will dramatically expand its capacity for high-resolution imaging.
A Leap Forward in Scientific Imaging
The Glacios 2 Cryo-TEM is a state-of-the-art tool optimized for demanding applications like single-particle analysis, cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET), and micro-electron diffraction (MicroED). The Hydra Bio PFIB, equipped with an integrated fluorescent light microscope (iFLM), will enable a diverse range of workflows, including high-resolution imaging, array tomography, and correlative light and electron microscopy.
“these new microscopes will be transformative for our researchers,” explains a university spokesperson. “They will allow us to push the boundaries of knowledge in fields like structural biology, cell biology, materials science, and physical science,
