Title: Germany’s largest offshore wind farm produces first electricity

Germany‘s Dolwin6 Wind Farm Begins Operation ‍with First Turbine

Cuxhaven, Germany – December 3, 2025, 03:58 CET – The first⁤ turbine at Dolwin6, poised to become Germany’s⁣ largest offshore wind farm, has successfully begun operation, marking⁤ a⁢ important step toward the nation’s renewable‍ energy goals. Located approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) off the coast⁤ of Lower Saxony in the ⁣North Sea, the project represents ⁤a substantial investment in clean energy infrastructure.

The 960 MW ⁢wind farm, ⁣developed by TenneT‍ and E.ON, will ultimately comprise 77 wind turbines capable of supplying electricity to approximately 600,000 households. This initial⁣ turbine activation is a crucial milestone,‍ demonstrating the project’s technical readiness and paving the way for full commissioning anticipated in 2026. Dolwin6 is a key component of Germany’s broader energy transition strategy, Energiewende, aiming to phase out fossil fuels and increase reliance on renewable sources. The wind farm’s generated power will be transported to ‌the mainland via a direct current⁢ high-voltage transmission system, minimizing losses‌ over long distances.

The Dolwin6 project is ‍notably ‌noteworthy for it’s innovative grid connection technology. TenneT is employing high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology to efficiently transmit the offshore wind power over 220 kilometers (137 miles) to⁤ the Emden/Meppen⁤ region. This approach‍ is essential for integrating large-scale offshore wind energy into the German power grid, wich faces challenges related to distance and grid ‌stability.

Germany has been aggressively expanding its offshore wind capacity ⁤in recent‍ years, recognizing the potential ‍of the North and Baltic Seas to contribute substantially to its energy mix. ‌As of late 2025, the country boasts‌ over‌ 25 operational offshore wind farms with a total installed capacity exceeding 8.5 GW. The ⁢Dolwin6 project underscores Germany’s commitment to ⁢becoming a leader in offshore wind technology and a major⁤ player in the European renewable energy‍ market.
