Gaza Power Struggle: Hamas Faces challenge from Doghmush Clan and ‘Army of Islam’
GAZA – As Hamas attempts to reassert control over Gaza following the partial withdrawal of Israeli troops,a rival clan – the Doghmush family – is emerging as a notable obstacle, bolstered by extensive smuggling networks, weapons depots, and local security ties. The family’s influence stems from the “Army of Islam,” a militia founded in 2006 by Mumtaz doghmush, which initially fought alongside Hamas in the 2006 kidnapping of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
However, the Doghmush family has since become a symbol of armed resistance self-reliant of Hamas, directly challenging the group’s authority. Hamas fears a power vacuum will further empower clans like the Doghmush, alleging they stole weapons and ammunition from Hamas depots during the recent conflict and even received supplies from Israel, according to local sources.
In response, Hamas has begun carrying out public executions targeting alleged collaborators with rival militias, mirroring tactics employed by the Taliban, in an effort to quell dissent and re-establish control. Approximately 7,000 Hamas fighters have been mobilized to restore order.
Despite the offensive, the Doghmush clan, led by Mumtaz Doghmush – who has remained out of public view for years – continues to operate as a parallel force, particularly in southern Gaza, and is considered a destabilizing factor in the territory by security authorities and regional analysts.
