Fever Cases Surge as Illness wave Hits Germany in Early December
Berlin - A notable increase in illness is sweeping across Germany as December begins, with reported cases of fever rising sharply, according to data from SmED, a system for monitoring adverse drug reactions. The latest figures show a 14.8% jump in fever complaints during calendar week 47, reaching a total of 4,108 cases – a notable increase from the 3,566 reported in the previous week.
This surge in fever cases is occurring alongside a broader uptick in reported symptoms, particularly concerning eye redness. Complaints of red eyes have increased by 10.3%, with 2,275 calls registered to patient services in week 47, compared to 2,062 the week prior.Health officials attribute the rise in eye irritation to the dry heating air common during colder months, which can disrupt the eye’s protective tear film and lead to inflammation. The AOK health insurance company recommends regular ventilation, increased fluid intake, maintaining humidity levels between 40 and 60 percent, and gentle eyelid care to mitigate these symptoms.
The increase in illness comes as seasonal respiratory viruses typically begin to circulate more widely.Individuals experiencing fever or other concerning symptoms are advised to consult their doctor or contact patient services at 116 117.Support is also available through free, anonymous telephone counseling at 0800 / 111 0 111 and 0800 / 111 0 222, or online at https://online.telefonseelsorge.de/.
