Rare Quintuplets Reunite with Doctors Who Guided Their Miraculous Start
Seoul, south Korea – In a heartwarming display of medical triumph and familial love, a set of quintuplets born last year at Seoul St. Mary’s hospital have made a healthy return for routine check-ups, reuniting with the medical team who oversaw their precarious beginnings. This marks the first time all five siblings have visited the hospital together since being discharged, a testament too their remarkable progress.
The quintuplets – Sae-Him, Sae-chan, Saegang, Saebyeol, and Spring – where born to parents Sak Gong-hye (31) and Kim Joon-young (32) after just 26 weeks of gestation. Their birth is exceptionally rare, placing them among a tiny fraction of quintuplets born worldwide.
The delivery, performed via Cesarean section, presented meaningful challenges. The boys weighed between 800-900 grams at birth, while the girls, Saebyeol and Spring, were even smaller, weighing just 700 grams and 736 grams respectively. All five required a stay in the hospital’s newborn intensive care unit (NICU).
“It was a very worrying time,” explained Professor Soo-bin of the obstetrics and Gynecology department at catholic University St. Mary’s Hospital, who led the medical team. “The babies’ cries weren’t strong, but…”
The parents demonstrated unwavering dedication throughout the ordeal, visiting the NICU daily. The hospital noted the mother-in-law’s tireless efforts, delivering fresh milk to the hospital every day to support the babies’ nourishment.
After months of dedicated care from the medical staff and unwavering support from their family, the quintuplets began to thrive. Sae-him, Sae-chan, and Saegang were discharged in January, followed by Saebyeol in March, and finally Spring, the smallest of the five, in April – all within six months of their birth.
Their recent return to Seoul St.Mary’s hospital for check-ups is a powerful symbol of hope and a celebration of modern medicine’s ability to overcome even the most daunting challenges. The story of these quintuplets is a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the profound impact of dedicated medical care.
