Europe Launches New Handball Tournament with‍ Olympic Berth on the Line

Vienna, Austria – In a move to secure European representation in Olympic handball, the European Handball Federation (EHF) announced ​today the creation of the European Handball Games, a new quadrennial tournament beginning in 2030. The competition will feature ⁤the ⁢eight top men’s⁢ and women’s national teams ⁤from across the continent, ‌with the winner earning a ⁢direct qualification spot for the subsequent Olympic Games.

EHF President Michael Wiederer emphasized the⁢ strategic importance of the Games, ⁣especially⁤ with the 2028 Los Angeles and 2032 Brisbane Olympics taking place outside of Europe. “With⁤ the introduction of the European handball Games,​ the European Handball Federation‌ guarantees that handball will​ be played at an Olympic level in Europe in this cycle to – and the european Olympic starting ​place is the ultimate prize,” he stated.

The EHF confirmed that the existing European Championships, held every ⁤two years, will continue unaffected. However, the traditional qualification pathway – previously awarding an ‍Olympic berth to the reigning European champion – is under review.Details regarding the tournament⁣ format and team selection criteria will be finalized during EHF discussions in december.
