Demolition has begun at the site of the former Kroger on East Main Street in Columbus, clearing the way for the eastland Prosperity Center – a comprehensive resource hub slated to open in fall 2026. The project aims to address critical needs on the East Side by providing access to food, healthcare, benefit resources, and workforce development programs.
The Metropolitan Opportunity for Central Ohio’s Foodbank (MOFC) is leading the development of the center, anticipating it will serve approximately 100,000 individuals annually. The initiative seeks to reduce barriers to assistance by offering a unique “shopping” experience where individuals can freely select needed items without financial transaction, minimizing the stigma associated with seeking help. “You go in, you shop, you put it in yoru shopping cart,” explained a MOFC representative. ”The only difference when you check out is that its free and we do this so we’re reducing the stigma of asking for help.”
Beyond food access, the Eastland Prosperity center will consolidate vital services in one location. Residents will be able to connect with healthcare providers and navigate available benefit programs, alongside opportunities for skills training and job placement. “This is really going to be a hub for the community and it’s surely in a place where it’s much needed,” said a MOFC spokesperson.
Individuals currently in need of assistance can find resources by visiting MOFC’s website and utilizing their food finder tool at https://mofc.org/.
