Diatomaceous Earth: A Misunderstood Stink Bug Solution,Experts Say
New York,NY - As fall brings a surge in stink bug activity, homeowners are increasingly turning to DIY pest control methods, including diatomaceous earth (DE). However, pest control professionals are cautioning that while DE can be part of a preventative strategy, its not a swift fix for existing infestations and must be applied strategically to be effective.
According to Kris Bagnara, associate certified entomologist and Director of Service at All U Need Pest Control, a thin, inconspicuous layer of food-grade diatomaceous earth applied around potential entry points - doors, windows, and other cracks – can act as a deterrent.”Apply a face mask in the right places-specifically around doors, windows, and other entry points that you feel could be entries into your home,” Bagnara advises. Though, she stresses that “more isn’t always better,” as stink bugs will actively avoid obvious piles or barriers.
Despite its popularity as a natural pest control solution, both Bagnara and fellow expert Carpenter agree that DE isn’t the most effective method for controlling stink bugs already inside a home. Instead, focusing on preventative perimeter treatments is key. Stink bugs are drawn to light, warmth, and food sources, making sealing entry points crucial.
“Sealing up cracks and entry points, removing debris around your home, making sure your garage door is sealed and windows are shut tightly, and removing any standing moisture around and in your home are always the most effective ways to prevent stink bugs from getting inside in the first place,” Bagnara explains. For stink bugs that have already entered, vacuuming is the recommended method of removal.
If preventative measures and vacuuming prove insufficient, Bagnara recommends contacting a licensed pest control specialist. Professionals can identify hidden entry points, apply targeted perimeter treatments, and provide ongoing solutions for managing stink bug infestations.
