St. Petersburg College Students to Sharpen Skills at Checkmate Society Meetings
ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Chess enthusiasts at St. Petersburg College will have a new prospect to connect and compete with the bi-weekly meetings of The Checkmate Society, beginning October 7, 2025. The student-led club offers a welcoming habitat for players of all skill levels to enjoy casual gameplay and refine their strategic thinking.
Founded by students, The Checkmate Society aims to foster a community around the classic game of chess on the St. Petersburg/Gibbs campus. Meetings will be held from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM every other Tuesday in SA-114,located at 6605 5th Ave. N, St. Petersburg, FL 33710. The club provides a space for both seasoned Grandmasters and beginners to learn, practice, and engage in friendly competition.
“We all meet as rulers over the board,” reflects the club’s ethos, emphasizing inclusivity and shared passion for the game. The Checkmate Society encourages members to improve their skills and enjoy the intellectual challenge of chess in a supportive atmosphere.
