Duke Freshman Cameron Boozer Ties Program Record with 35 Points in Win Over Indiana State
NEW YORK – Cameron Boozer, Duke’s highly touted freshman forward, exploded for 35 points Saturday, tying the program’s single-game freshman scoring record and leading the Blue Devils to a dominant victory over Indiana state. The performance marks a meaningful early statement for Boozer and solidifies Duke’s position as a national contender.
Boozer’s 35-point outing places him in elite company, sharing the record with Zion Williamson (2018-19) and Jared McCain (2023-24). He surpassed former Blue Devil standouts Marvin Bagley III and J.J. Redick in their freshman seasons with the program. This achievement is especially noteworthy as the other four members of the top five on Duke’s single-game freshman scoring list all whent on to become first-round NBA draft selections.
The freshman forward was remarkably efficient, connecting on 13 of 16 field goal attempts, including both of his 3-point tries, and adding 7 of 11 free throws. Beyond scoring, Boozer also led the team with 12 rebounds and five assists, demonstrating a well-rounded impact on the game.
“Things naturally happen,” Boozer said, reflecting on his performance.”Just really thinking about what can I do every play.”
Duke coach Jon Scheyer praised Boozer’s efficiency, stating, “I don’t know how you could be more efficient. I think his three misses, he got all the rebounds and scored them.” Scheyer also noted he wants Boozer to be even more aggressive with his scoring, adding, “I thought he was doing a great job of getting others open.”
Boozer’s dominance in the lane proved too much for the smaller Sycamores to handle, according to teammate Caleb Foster, who said, “He gets it down in the paint, he’s going to attack the rim, it’s hard to stop him.”
The Blue Devils (3-1) will now face a challenging test against No. 25 Kansas on Tuesday night in New York, as Boozer looks to continue his notable start to his collegiate career. He is currently averaging 22.5 points per game.
