Toyota Dominates Argentine Car Market as chinese EVs Gain Limited traction
Buenos Aires, Argentina – toyota led the Argentine light vehicle market in August 2025 with 9,709 units sold, capturing an 18.8% market share, as overall sales rose 32.2% year-over-year to 51,509 units. Volkswagen and Fiat followed, securing 8,616 and 5,971 sales respectively. While the market experiences growth, Chinese electric vehicle brands are making a modest entry, remaining a small fraction of total sales.
The Argentine automotive landscape is undergoing a shift, with customary manufacturers maintaining a strong hold despite increasing global interest in electric vehicles. The performance of Toyota, Volkswagen, and Fiat underscores their established presence, while the limited penetration of Chinese EV brands highlights the challenges of entering a competitive market and adapting to local consumer preferences. This dynamic is crucial for both automakers and policymakers as Argentina navigates its transition towards sustainable transportation.
Several models saw critically important growth in sales. The Toyota Hilux surged with an 84.4% increase, while the Toyota Corolla Cross led the SUV segment with 14,165 units sold this year, up 42.4%. The Chevrolet Tracker also demonstrated strong performance, achieving a 77.8% growth rate.Notably, the Peugeot 2008 experienced an remarkable 1858.7% increase, becoming the month’s standout performer.
Among Chinese EV brands, BYD ranked highest in 14th position with 391 units sold in August. Haval followed in 16th (350 units), DFSK in 20th (98), FAW in 21st (93), JAC in 22nd (88), Chery in 24th (64), and Great Wall in 38th (9). These rankings indicate that,despite the global trend towards electrification,Chinese brands currently hold a marginal position within the Argentine market compared to established players.
