Air Force Captures Dramatic flight Through Hurricane Melissa as Jamaica Braces for Potential “Storm of the Century”
October 27, 2025 – Stunning footage captured by an Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft shows a flight directly into the eye of Hurricane Melissa, now the strongest hurricane of 2025 and potentially the most intense ever recorded so late in the Atlantic hurricane season. The storm is currently threatening jamaica,Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba, with at least four storm-related deaths already reported in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
The video, posted to Twitter by user @cantworkitout, depicts the dramatic entry into the hurricane just after sunrise, revealing a shining arc on the eye wall.
On Monday, Hurricane Melissa’s sustained wind speeds reached 175 mph (282 km/h), surpassing the Category 5 threshold - reserved for hurricanes with sustained winds of at least 157 mph (252 km/h). Anything above Category 2 is considered a major hurricane. AccuWeather reports the storm’s intensity is unprecedented for this late in the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1st to November 30th.
Meteorologists warn that Melissa’s rapid intensification is linked to climate change, which is causing atmospheric and sea temperatures to soar. Average sea surface temperatures globally have broken records since March 2023, providing additional energy for hurricanes to grow. More hurricanes are rapidly intensifying in the Atlantic as a result, according to Live science.
