Dublin’s Autumn Cultural Calendar Brims with Theater, Drama & Family History
Dublin is poised for a vibrant autumn season of arts and entertainment, offering a diverse range of experiences from stage adaptations of acclaimed novels and memoirs to a sweeping ancient drama about the Guinness family. Here are 10 cultural highlights to anticipate in the coming months.
1. Macbeth: The latest endeavour from Warts plays at the Gaiety Theatre from September 25th to October 5th, featuring the fantastic Marty Rea as the titular Scottish general.
2. Re-Creation: Writer/director Jim Sheridan’s film, starring Aidan gillen, Colm Meaney and Vicky Krieps, imagines how a trial jury may have deliberated the evidence in the case of Sophie Toscan du Plantier, for which Ian Bailey was never tried in an Irish court. Released October 3rd.
3. House of Guinness: Netflix’s big-budget drama delves into the characters behind the world’s most famous brewing family, set in 19th century Dublin and New York, beginning September 25th. The series stars Anthony Boyle as Arthur Guinness and Danielle Galligan as Lady Olivia Hedges.
4. Trespasses: Adapted from Louise Kennedy’s superb novel by Ailbhe Keogan (Bad Sisters), this TV mini-series is set in 1970s Belfast during the Troubles. It follows Cushla (Lola Petticrew), a young Catholic teacher, who falls for Michael (Tom Cullen), an older, married Protestant solicitor. Gillian Anderson co-stars. (Channel 4, autumn TBC).
5. Poor: Katriona O’Sullivan’s best-selling memoir has been adapted for the stage by comedian and playwright Sonya Kelly. The play,shaping up to be a harrowing but hopeful affair,follows her journey from a childhood ravaged by poverty and addiction to an inspirational apogee.
