Face masks can damage the skin – this can help!

During the coronavirus pandemic, many people have to wear more face masks. This can cause skin irritation and rashes on the face. A dermatologist gives tips on how to avoid irritation and how to treat these symptoms.

Dr. Dawn Davis is a dermatologist at the renowned Mayo Clinic in the USA. In a current article, the skin expert explains how to avoid or treat skin problems that can occur when wearing mouth-nose masks.

How do skin irritations occur when wearing a mask?

“People are experiencing increased skin irritation through the bridge of the nose, behind the ears and under the chin,” explains Dr. Davis. This happens partly due to natural wear and partly due to the mask being too tight, as a result of which the skin is literally strangled. The masks must neither be too loose nor too tight. In particular, people who suffer from skin diseases such as acne, rosacea or psoriasis may experience increased complaints.

Zinc oxide can help

Dr. Davis recommends using zinc oxide. “It has very good anti-inflammatory properties,” emphasizes the dermatologist. Affected people can apply a thin layer of the ointment on the bridge of the nose, behind the ears or under the chin – these are the places where the mask rubs the most. The device serves as a barrier against friction, but does not reduce the protective effect of the mask.

The right care

According to Davis, the first step in preventing and treating skin irritation is to apply a hypoallergenic moisturizer after washing and dabbing your face. The facial moisturizer should be applied twice – the second time a thicker layer should be applied.

Vinegar treatment for skin problems on the face

In order to get the skin problems under control, the skin expert recommends treatment with vinegar. To do this, put a teaspoon of vinegar in a small bowl of warm water and soak a washcloth in it. Then place the soaked rag on the irritated skin for around 15 minutes. “Repeat two or three times a day if possible, and you will find that this moisturizing method is very helpful,” emphasizes the dermatologist.
