Tips for Safe Ramadan Fasting for COVID-19 Patients

Jakarta

Fasting Ramadan is a form of worship that is awaited by Muslims. However, what if it gets infected Corona? Can it still be safe to fast?

“If there are no symptoms, it means that there are no symptoms, please fast, but observe, because once again we are under observation, there are no symptoms. When we are fasting, the body temperature suddenly rises, for example 37.5 degrees Celsius, I think it cancels the fast,” said the Dean of the Faculty. Medicine University of Indonesia (FKUI), Dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, in a webinar some time ago.

It doesn’t matter if OTG patients keep fasting. However, they must consume healthy foods such as vegetables, fruit, and enough water. This is to keep the body’s immunity strong.

It’s just that they have to pay attention to the condition of their respective bodies. If you feel insecure, it’s okay not to fast and don’t push yourself.

If OTG is still allowed to fast, in contrast to Corona patients who have mild symptoms, they are not advised to fast.

“In principle, I say that if you are acutely infected, for example fever, coughs, colds, typhus, and dengue fever, including COVID-19, even though the symptoms are mild, it is not advisable to fast,” he explained.

Prof. Ari explained that when the body is infected with a virus, in this case COVID-19, there will be resistance at the time of infection. The body requires a lot of energy intake to fight the disease.

“At that time we need to drink, when we are infected we need to drink, then we need to eat regularly every 6 or 8 hours. If we fast, no food or drink will enter the body,” added Prof. Ari.
