Tips for Healthy Eating to Be More Affordable

Fruits and vegetables can be an economical and healthy option.

Here are some nutritionist-endorsed tips:

Eat nuts and seeds
Consumption such as beans, lentils, kidney beans, green beans and peas is a source of protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals that are cheap and low in fat. They also count as part of the recommended five daily servings of fruits and vegetables.

“You will be surprised to see how affordable these beans and grains are,” said nutritionist Jenna Hope as reported from the site RTE, Saturday (15/8).

Hope said nuts are a good source of protein, B vitamins and dietary fiber. To get bigger and save money, try buying dried varieties.

Frozen fruits and vegetables
Eating healthy doesn’t always have to come from expensive, fresh organic vegetable and fruit stores. “Frozen fruit and vegetables are often as nutritious as fresh ones, so this is a great alternative when thinking about cheap dinner ideas,” says Rob Hobson, a nutritionist at Healthspan.

“Frozen fruit can be added to smoothies or a healthy breakfast menu, while veggies like peas, cauliflower and sweetcorn can be added to a variety of dishes, including soups and stews.”

Eat canned fish
Can’t afford fresh salmon from a fishmonger? “Canned fish is a great inexpensive way to fix your omega-3s,” says Hope.

Omega-3s are fatty acids that play an important role in brain function, as well as intestinal and bone health in the body. “Try to choose canned salmon and mackerel over fresh varieties,” he adds, because often packaged fish are cheaper, but they don’t reduce the nutritional content in them.

Make a plan
Hobson believes one of the best ways to manage a food budget is to map out what you will eat throughout the week. “Think about how you can use up the leftovers the next day and turn them into other interesting dishes too,” added Hobson.

“For example, a pot of chili can be used as a filling for lunch to make Mexican Wrap. Just add sour cream, grated cheese, and a little avocado for a great lunch snack.”

Take advantage of all vegetables in cooking
Use a pattern from the roots to the tips of the leaves of the vegetables you consume. “For example, you can use cauliflower leaves and carrots in soup, roast pumpkin seeds with salt and oil for snacking, and use vegetable peels to make homemade broth,” says Hope.

According to Hope, the less you waste, the longer your schedule for the supermarket, so you can save money in the long run.
