Tips for a Relaxing Holiday with an E-Car: How to Plan and Drive Efficiently

Tips for a relaxing holiday with an e-car

In 2022 there were around 470,500 new registrations of purely electric cars in Germany. Many Germans are possibly going on holiday in a Stromer for the first time this year. Peter Schnitzler, motor vehicle expert at ERGO, knows what preparations you should make in order to arrive relaxed at your destination.

Well-planned is halfway there

Vehicles with purely electric drives can now cover up to 700 kilometers with one battery charge. And the number of charging stations is also increasing. “Nevertheless, e-car drivers should plan their travel routes in advance. The most important criterion here is the availability of charging stations along the route,” says Peter Schnitzler, motor vehicle expert at ERGO. “Holidaymakers can now find numerous maps on the Internet that show charging options in Germany and abroad.” A good overview is provided, for example www.lemnet.org Some maps are also available as an app or are already integrated into the navigation system. “Holidaymakers should also find out about payment systems abroad before they leave,” says Schnitzler.

Drive energy-efficiently

With the right driving style, the range of e-cars can be significantly increased. “Anyone who anticipates, relaxes and doesn’t drive too fast will get further with one charge,” says the motor vehicle expert. “Drivers should always let their car roll whenever possible. This even slightly recharges the battery.” The electric motor brake has the same effect when driving downhill. It is better to switch off energy guzzlers such as heating, air conditioning and the like when the battery charge is dwindling. The so-called E mode, which optimizes consumption and is available in many electric vehicles, can also help to save battery. When it comes to luggage, less is more – mostly for reasons of space. Schnitzler also recommends checking the tire pressure before setting off. If it is too low, it reduces the range.

Allow enough time for the journey

Vacationers with an e-car should plan a little more time for the journey. It takes longer to fill a battery than a tank, and the charging stations can also be occupied, which lengthens the waiting time. Nevertheless, the following applies: “It’s better to head for the next charging station too early than too late,” advises the automotive expert. “The remaining range of 100 kilometers is a good starting point for this.” In that case, detours or traffic jams will not cause the drivers to break out in a sweat.

When the Stromer runs out of juice

If, despite all the planning, the battery suddenly runs out, Schnitzler advises contacting the manufacturer first. Some help as part of the warranty in the event of a breakdown free of charge. If this has expired, e-car drivers have to reckon with costs for the service. Alternatively, you can also call the breakdown service. This can recharge the empty battery directly on site. If it is defective, the only thing that usually helps is towing it. “However, this is not possible with all models,” says Schnitzler. “In this case, the breakdown service transports the e-car to the nearest workshop in a recovery vehicle.” Some car insurance policies also include towing to the next charging station via a special e-car add-on module.
