Iceland and Greenland Beckon

Instead of basking in the Mediterranean sun, Nijkamp revealed her travel plans to the icy landscapes of Iceland and Greenland. “I don’t like the summer at all!” she stated, citing the oppressive heat she experiences at home.

“I’m going to Iceland, because I don’t like the summer. I’m going to Iceland and Greenland. Yes, wonderful. I think it’s far too hot here.”

Her preference for sub-zero temperatures and glacial scenery is a stark contrast to the typical Dutch summer holiday. Tourism in Greenland, a nation with a population smaller than many European cities, often involves expeditions exploring fjords, observing wildlife like humpback whales, and visiting remote settlements.

Volcanoes and Glaciers: A Different Holiday Vibe

When questioned about her activities in these unique locations, Nijkamp responded with a simple plan: “Well, then I just go… there they all have volcanoes and I know a lot of all. Just chilling.” This unconventional approach to a holiday bypasses traditional beach resorts and sunbathing.

Her colleague, Mark Koster, expressed mild bewilderment at her choice, posing the question, “A very strange question, but what exactly are you going to do?”

No Beach Days for This Star

Nijkamp confirmed that beach visits are not part of her summer agenda, even admitting she hasn’t actively sunbathed in years, though she may occasionally walk her dog by the sea.

“So it’s not that you can be found on a beach?”

Mark Koster

“No.”

“Never?”

Mark Koster

“No.”

She mentioned family trips to Center Parcs, noting that while her children enjoy swimming, the locations themselves lack beaches, aligning with her personal preferences.

Family Ties to the Arctic

When Koster inquired if her children might be beach enthusiasts, Nijkamp was quick to confirm they share her aversion to sun-drenched shores. “Yes, they are both fortunately not, so I benefit from that,” she shared, playfully dismissing any suggestion of imposing her tastes on them.

The stark contrast in vacation preferences highlights a growing trend of experiential travel. For instance, adventure tourism, which often includes cold-weather destinations, saw a 10% increase in bookings globally in 2023, according to the Adventure Travel Trade Association.
