Tikhanovsky: Dialogue with the opposition can not take place in prison – Abroad – News

“Dialogue cannot take place in prison,” she said, commenting on Lukashenko’s only media phrase about the meeting that “the constitution is not written on the streets.”

“We do not know what happened there, but we can say that he made his proposals to the detainees, but the detainees rejected them because they have their own morals and principles and they know what they are fighting for,” Tihanovska told reporters after a meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister François Philip Champagne, who has arrived in Vilnius.

The Pul Pervogo channel, close to the Belarusian president, reportedly met with detainees in the Lukashenko remand center last Saturday with members of the opposition Coordination Council and the joint opposition headquarters. The channel stated that the participants of the four-hour conversation would keep its content secret by joint decision, and quoted only the statement already mentioned by Lukashenko.

During the meeting, the Canadian Foreign Minister reaffirmed his support for Tihanovska and the opposition Coordination Council she founded, which wants to reach talks on the change of power in Belarus.

“You can count on Canadians to be on your side, you can count on me to be on your side, and I think you can count on the international community to be with you and the people of Belarus in their efforts to achieve a more democratic future,” Champagne said.

“In our discussions, we looked for ways in which Canada can provide technical assistance by providing the Coordinating Council with the tools and support it needs to hand over power and secure an inspiring future in Belarus,” he added.

Tihanovska thanked the Canadian leadership for its support, noting that the sanctions imposed by Western countries send an important message to the violent members of the Minsk regime.

“For Belarusian criminals, this shows that the international community is watching them, that they need to think twice before deciding on violence,” she told a joint news conference.

Canada announced the day before that it had extended sanctions against the Lukashenko regime for human rights abuses. According to the Canadian Government, the sanctions were imposed in liaison with the European Union and the United States.

Commenting on the information that Belarus had declared him in an international search, Tikhanyovsky told journalists that he did not attach special importance to it, as he was convinced that all charges would be dropped after the change of regime in Minsk.

The Belarusian Committee of Inquiry reportedly confirmed in Russian media on Friday that the opposition leader had been declared in an international search, noting that the decision was made in connection with her participation in the opposition’s Coordinating Council.

Concerned about the safety of himself and his children, Tikhanovsky left Belarus and took refuge in Lithuania immediately after the August 9 presidential election. Outside her country, she met with European leaders and called on Lukashenko to step down.
