Tikhanovsky asks Merkel for help – Abroad – News

Tikhanovsky presented Merkel with an umbrella in Belarusian national white-red colors.

After 45 minutes of conversations with Merkel, Tikhanovska issued a statement reiterating that

the relentless protests in Belarus “are not a fight against Russia or Europe”, but are a consequence of the crisis caused by the falsification of the results of the presidential election.

“We would like Germany, as one of the most powerful countries in the world, to help us in the negotiations,” the leader of the Belarusian opposition said before the meeting with the chancellor.

Recently introduced against the regime of Alexander Lukashenko European Union (EU) sanctions Tikhanovsky rated it as a “victory, albeit a small victory.”

In a pre-talks organized by NGOs before the talks with Merkel, Tikhanovsky called on Russian President Vladimir Putin not to interfere in Belarus’ internal affairs.

“I would ask Mr Putin not to support the regime, because what is happening in Belarus is our internal affair,” Tihanovska said to an audience at the German Marshall Fund.

Earlier, in a conversation with Der Spiegel magazine, she suggested that Merkel’s possible mediation in resolving the crisis in Belarus could be discussed with Merkel.

Protests against the falsification of the presidential election have been reported in Belarus for almost two months. Several thousand people have been detained and several hundred injured during the protests.

According to the official results of the presidential election in Belarus on August 9, the current head of state Lukashenko won 80.1% of the vote, and the opposition candidate Tikhanovska – 10.1%, but the opposition believes that the election results are fake and Tikhanovsky won the election convincingly.

The EU and other Western countries have also refused to recognize the election results.
