Marvel hero Thor faces old friends and new adversaries in July. Ryan Gosling shows his agent qualities and Monsieur Claude grumbles for the third time.
In terms of quantity, the first signs of a summer slump cannot be denied in the cinema month of July. But it is thanks to a thunder god of the Thor brand that a true blockbuster awaits film fans.
“Thor 4: Love And Thunder” with Chris Hemsworth (38), Natalie Portman (41) and Christian Bale (48) opens the screen bustle on July 6th. Star-studded it continues a week later with “The Gray Man” plus Ryan Gosling (41), Ana de Armas (34) and Chris Evans (41). Meanwhile, anyone who appreciated the first two parts of the French comedy film series about the conservative Monsieur Claude (Christian Clavier, 70) will get “His Big Celebration” on the 21st.
„Thor: Love And Thunder“, 6. Juli
Thor’s (Hemsworth) retirement is interrupted by a galactic assassin named Gorr (Bale) who seeks the annihilation of all gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson, 38), Korg (Taika Waititi, 46), and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Portman), who – to Thor’s great surprise – is inexplicably dubbed “Mighty.” Thor” wields his magical hammer Mjolnir. Together they embark on a cosmic adventure to unravel the mystery of Gorr’s revenge and stop him before it’s too late.
Assessment:
The first trailer for “Thor: Love And Thunder” by director Taika Waititi promised mainly slapstick. But at least since Oscar winner Christian Bale was presented as a new adversary, fans of more serious tones can hope again. His character Gorr comes around the corner, at least visually, as the so far darkest threat in the entire MCU and promises to have far-reaching consequences for the Marvel warriors. Will the godslayer live up to his name? With Portman as “Mighty Thor” a successor would already have been found…
„The Gray Man“, 14. Juli
CIA agent Court Gentry (Gosling), also known as Sierra Six, is the “Gray Man”. While incarcerated in a federal prison, he is recruited by the CIA and trained by his new boss Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton, 66) to become one of the top foreign intelligence agency hitmen. But then Sierra Six suddenly becomes a target himself: A nerve-racking hunt begins around the world, in which Lloyd Hansen (Evans), a former CIA agent, will stop at nothing to take him out. Agent Dani Miranda (de Armas) provides Sierra Six with unexpected support.
Assessment:
Ryan Gosling has already proven in “Blade Runner 2049” and “Drive” that he cuts a fine figure on the hunt and on the run. For many “Bond” fans, meanwhile, Ana de Armas was considered the secret highlight in the latest 007 flick “No Time to Die”. Consequently, “The Gray Man” could become a real insider tip for all secret agent friends. Especially since a strong antithesis was found in Chris Evans. And if you prefer to go on a spy mission in your own four walls and casually on the supposedly hot days, you will have the opportunity to do so just under a week after the theatrical release. The Gray Man will be available on Netflix on July 22nd.
“Monsieur Claude and his great party”, July 21
Monsieur Claude (Clavier) walks through his home town aren’t what they used to be either. Since the multicultural marriages of their four daughters, he and his wife Marie have been seasoned professionals at tapping into the deepest reserves of tolerance, but they are gradually being used up. Because the unloved sons-in-law are now also their neighbors! Their bickering about apples falling on parsley, the Jewish sugar festival, the Arabic barbecue party and the vernissages of his daughter Segolène’s entrails painting elicit unexpected abilities from Monsieur Claude in the disciplines of taking a deep breath, raising eyebrows and suddenly disappearing. Meanwhile, Marie wonders how her marriage is actually doing. Because her 40th wedding anniversary is approaching and mature love also wants to be sworn.
Assessment:
With “Monsieur Claude and his daughters”, a surprise hit spilled over from neighboring France to Germany in 2014. In Germany alone, almost four million people watched the comedy about the narrow-minded head of the family and his unloved multicultural sons-in-law. Anyone who still knows how to entertain this principle after part two can now once again latch onto the quarreling extended family. Those who have nothing to do with typical French humor should meanwhile also avoid part three.
