Three vice mayors for Riga: Cherry, Smiltene and Oak – in Latvia – News

Cherry was elected vice mayor with 37 votes in favor and 20 votes against, but 37 deputies voted for Ozola and Smiltene, 16 against.

As reported, the deputies of the Riga City Council met for the first sitting on Friday, at which they were elected mayor of the city Mārtiņu Staķi, while an extraordinary meeting was convened to adopt amendments to the Riga City Municipality Regulations, providing that the Mayor of Riga Mārtiņš Staķis (APP) will have three deputies. Immediately afterwards, three candidates spoke, questioned, debated and voted on.

All three vice-mayor candidates made speeches before their election, as well as answering countless questions from opposition MPs, so the meeting lasted for more than four hours.

Cherry was the first to answer the questions, emphasizing that

his priorities in this position will be to raise funds for the capital’s municipality and to make the city’s infrastructure more people-friendly.

Kiris also emphasized that Riga needs to do a lot in terms of eliminating queues in kindergartens, solving housing issues, as well as purposefully attracting investments and improving the city’s infrastructure.

Opposition deputies spent a lot of time questioning Ķiršs, trying to find out his opinion on the construction plans of certain infrastructure objects, his position in relation to the e-ticket system introduced in Riga public transport and other issues.

In his turn, Smilten in his speech emphasized that

Riga needs to be opened for cooperation with the Saeima, the government and Pieriga municipalities,

and stated that during the reign of the previous coalition, the full potential of the Riga region, which has a population of 1.1 million, was not used.

He said that the solutions to the problems of many Rigans are outside Riga. Related to this are the elimination of queues in kindergartens, creation of unified tickets, development of transport schemes and mobility solutions, planning of recreation areas in Riga and Pieriga.

However, he said that he did not convince the opposition deputies that co-operation with Pieriga municipalities required a deputy mayor’s position.

In his address to the new colleagues, Ozola regretted that the problems of corruption in the municipality have become so acute that it is necessary to raise the fight against corruption to the level of Riga City Council management, emphasizing that

Corruption in the municipality is not related to only one committee or sector – this plague has affected an extremely large number of council structures.

Opposition deputies questioned Ozola for a long time, widely interested in the deputy’s opinion in connection with the fight against corruption, security and order issues in Riga. Opponents expressed the view that there is no need for another vice-mayor, as the committee responsible has successfully tackled corruption. To this, Ozola replied that the committee had not been able to cope with its work, which is confirmed many corruption scandals during the previous legislature.

The third meeting of the Riga City Council will be convened on Monday at 10 am, where it will be decided to elect the standing committees of the City Council, but from 2 pm the deputies elected to the committees will meet for the first sittings – committee sessions will take place
