Shukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselman and Giorgio Parisi – Nobel laureates in physics

Half of the prize will be awarded for reliable forecasting of global warming, and the other half for the analysis of complex physical systems.

The Nobel Prize winners in physics in 2021 were the German Klaus Hasselman, the Italian Giorgio Parisi and the Japanese American Shukuro Manabe. Their names were announced on October 5 by the Nobel Committee.

It is noted that Hasselman and Manabe received the award for “physical modeling of the earth’s climate and quantitative analysis of variations and reliable prediction of global warming”, and Parisi – for “discovering how disorder and fluctuations interact in physical systems on scales from atoms to planets.”

Thus, the cash prize of SEK 10 million (about $ 1.1 million) will be split: Manabe and Hasselman will receive one part of the funds, and Parisi will receive the other half.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the second year in a row, the Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Literature awards are not being presented in Sweden, but in the countries where the laureates live.

According to the schedule, on October 6, the winner of the chemistry prize will be named, and on October 7 – for literature.

The Peace Prize Laureate will be announced in Oslo on Friday 8 October and the Alfred Nobel Prize in Economics will be awarded on 11 October.

Recall last year prize winners in physics Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel, and Andrea Gez for studying black holes.

The Physics Prize is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Its first laureate in 1901 was the German scientist Konrad Roentgen, who was awarded for the discovery of radiation named after him.
