WASHINGTON (EFE).— The governments of Arizona, Louisiana and Missouri yesterday filed a lawsuit against the government of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, for his decision to suspend the use of a health standard under which almost 1.7 million migrants have been expedited removal for the past two years.
The lawsuit before the Federal Court of the Eastern District of Louisiana is headed by the attorney general of that state, Jeff Landry, and is accompanied by his peers from Arizona, Mark Brnovich, and from Missouri, Eric Schmitt.
Prosecutors believe that “the repeal of Title 42 will result in an unprecedented crisis on the southern border with a devastating impact not only in the border states but throughout the country,” according to the statement from the Arizona State Attorney’s Office.
The Biden government announced last week that next month it will cease the use of the rule, known as Title 42, which is part of the 1944 Public Health Law and temporarily authorizes the expulsion of foreigners for health reasons. The government of then President Donald Trump (20017-2021) resorted to that rule in March 2020, at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, and Biden has continued to use it even though the pandemic has subsided.
However, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explained last Friday that, given the evolution of the pandemic and vaccination coverage in the country, migrants no longer represent a health risk, so that next May they will lift Title 42.
“While it is difficult to identify the most irresponsible action by President Biden since he took office, the rescission of Title 42 is, without a doubt, one of the worst,” Brnovich stated.
For his part, Missouri Attorney General Schmitt indicated that “Title 42 is a crucial tool in controlling the flow of illegal immigrants to our southern border.”
Among the defendants are President Biden; the Secretary of Health, Xavier Becerra; the Secretary of National Security, Alejandro Maorkas, and the head of the Border Patrol, Raúl Ortiz.
