Three Germans die in avalanche accident in South Tyrol

This was confirmed by a spokesman for the Carabinieri in Bozen of the German Press Agency on Saturday evening. A 25-year-old woman and one of the girls come from Hauteroda (Kyffhäuserkreis) in Thuringia, the other girl from Eschweiler in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The people were on a slope in the Schnalstal west of Merano when the avalanche cleared at around 3,000 meters around Saturday noon and raced into a ski area. An eleven-year-old boy and his father, who also come from Eschweiler, were injured in the avalanche.

A spokesman for the Federal Foreign Office confirmed late Saturday evening that the dead were three Germans.

According to the Carabinieri spokesman, there was no avalanche risk. However, there was strong wind at the time of the accident and there had been a rise in temperature.

Possibly more victims

According to the police, the woman from Hauteroda and the girl from Eschweiler could only be recovered dead from the avalanche. The other girl was seriously injured with the rescue helicopter to a hospital in Trento, where she died of her injuries on Saturday evening.

The rescue workers also looked for other missing persons on Saturday. In the evening it was not entirely clear whether more people were buried. (Mt / dpa)

The avalanche had fallen on Thursday in the Swiss ski resort of Andermatt. Miraculously, all victims were released from the snow masses alive.
