Three dead and several injured in shooting in Copenhagen shopping center | NOW

Three people were killed in a shooting at a shopping center in the Danish capital Copenhagen on Sunday. Several people have also been injured. Three of them are in critical condition. Police commander Soren Thomassen confirms this at a press conference in the night from Sunday to Monday.

The assailant has been arrested, the police chief said. Police previously reported that a 22-year-old Danish man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The assailant was in possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was believed to have acted alone, but police have launched a major investigation to ensure no other persons were involved.

The police do not rule out an act of terrorism. The suspect has been charged with manslaughter and will be questioned Monday in the presence of a judge.

The shooting took place in Field’s shopping center. It is one of the largest shopping centers in Denmark and is located between the center and the airport of the capital.

Local media report that panic broke out when the shots were heard. A large crowd of people would have run outside afterwards.

Copenhagen’s main hospital, Rigshospitalet, reports having received a “small group of patients” in connection with the incident. The hospital has engaged additional staff, including surgeons and nurses.

Several witnesses describe to Danish media that the gunman allegedly walked through the shopping center with a raised rifle, without running. The suspect also allegedly tried to mislead people by saying that his weapon was fake, perhaps in the hope that they would not run away.

Danish prime minister speaks of ‘cruel attack’

The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, spoke of a “cruel attack” on Sunday evening. She called on the people of her country to support each other “during this difficult time”.

In a statement, the Danish royal family, on behalf of Queen Margrethe and the Crown Princes couple Frederik and Mary, said its thoughts and condolences go out to the victims. The royal family also calls for “unity and care” and thanks the authorities and emergency services “for their prompt and effective response over the past few hours”.
