Three dangerous mosquito species emerge in the Netherlands | Asian forest mosquito in Flevoland

Three dangerous exotic mosquito species have already been found at five locations in the Netherlands this year. The Stop invasive exotics platform reports this on the basis of information from the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).

These are said to be the tiger mosquito and the yellow fever mosquito in the Haarlemmermeer, the yellow fever mosquito in Moerdijk and the Asian forest mosquito in Lelystad.

Further information about the finds is not disclosed. It is strange, says Wilfred Reinhold, chair of the platform Stop invasive exotic species. “It is remarkable that the information from the NVWA about mosquito catches is becoming increasingly sparse. And that while it concerns information that is very relevant to the public. ”

Earlier it was announced that the NVWA had found the tiger mosquito in Honselersdijk and in Lelystad.

Infectious Diseases

Tiger mosquitoes can transmit more than 20 tropical infectious disease viruses, including dengue, Zika and Chikungunya. Until now, there have been no cases of infection in the Netherlands.

The exotic mosquitoes enter the Netherlands through the import of used car tires and bamboo ornamental plants, in which they lay eggs. For the plants the Commodities Act demands quarantine and cleaning with pesticides. The tires must be transported dry in accordance with a covenant and stored dry after arrival.
