– Such a trip is a huge burden. That they made this choice and set out on the road is an indication that there is something very serious behind it.

Helena Maleno, director of the Spanish humanitarian organization Caminando Fronteras (eng. Walking Borders) told Reuters.

– We have never seen a situation like this before, where migrants arrived alive, says Maleno.

The Spanish Coast Guard inform on Twitter who found three stowaways on the oil and chemical vessel Alithini II. Here they had sat on a rudder at the stern of the ship for eleven days without eating or drinking, writes CNN.

USE OF FISHING BOATS: Migrants in open fishing boats are met by other migrants in the port of Arguineguín on November 17, 2020.

The migrants were rescued ashore and treated for hypothermia and dehydration.

The boat had departed from Lagos in Nigeria along the west coast of Africa and arrived on Monday in Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. The destination of the trip was Europe.

According to Reuters, two of the three stowaways were sent back to the ship to be deported to Lagos on Tuesday. The last person is still hospitalized.

Helena Molena believes that migrants should have been informed of their rights.

– Migrants should at least be questioned before being sent back to the boat! They should have told them they have the right to seek political asylum, Molena says.

In 2021, more than 20,000 migrants traveled from the West African coast to the Canary Islands, according to the Red Cross.

VG wrote in 2020 on a record number of migrants from Africa to the Canary Islands.

VG has already written about it 43 drownings in shipwrecks outside Morocco, e doubling the number of migrant deaths from Africa to Europe in 2021.
