Threatening French girl insulting Islam and the Koran, 11 people convicted

PARIS – A French court convicted 11 of 13 people charged with harassing and threatening a teenage girl who insulted Islam and the holy Koran. The 18-year-old girl who claims to be an atheist spit out insulting words through a barrage posting on social media.

The girl, identified only by her short name Mila, was forced to change schools and received police protection to keep her safe.

Wednesday’s court ruling was the first since France set up a new court in January to prosecute crimes online, including harassment and discrimination.

The court sentenced the defendants to a four to six month jail term and a fine of about $1,770 each.

Mila, who is at the center of the case cyberbullying, testified last month that he felt as if he had been “condemned to death”.
