(CNN) — A teenager who shared a picture of a crowded hallway at your school high school in Georgia last week says it has been receiving threats after the image went viral.
Hannah Watters, a sophomore at the North Paulding High School, told CNN that she, her family and friends have been receiving screenshots of group talks with threatening language against them.
One message read, “I know where this girl lives,” he said. Other threats included: “We are going to attack all the girls named Hannah in the tenth grade” and “Hannah is going to have a difficult day at school on Monday,” Hannah told Boris Sánchez on Sunday night on the “Newsroom” program. »From CNN.
The teenager said she understands why people are upset, but said she shared the photo because she felt it was the right thing to do.
“I feel that many teachers support me because they know how dangerous it is to go to school. But I know a lot of the kids that I go to school with – I’ve already received criticism for it, threats and things like that, ”Hannah said. “I know I am doing the right thing and that will not stop me from doing it. But it’s worrying, especially since there are many people I go to school with, people I have known for years, who are threatening me.
School is closed after students tested positive for coronavirus
Last week, the high school in Dallas County, Georgia – about 70 miles from Atlanta – attracted nationwide attention because of Hannah’s photo. The image Viral showed students in a crowded school hallway and few masks were visible among them. The school district resumed classes on August 3.
Hannah previously told CNN that she shared the photo because she was concerned for the safety of her classmates and school staff, as well as the community at large.
As of Sunday, nine students at the school had tested positive for the virus, and the district announced that it would shift online learning for Monday and Tuesday.
Behind the News That the school will be closed for at least two days, Hannah said many people have told her they are being tested for the virus.
“I have heard from many friends who have been taking tests or that their family members or their teacher have taken the test because it has not been safe these days,” he said. “We were only in school for three days and the fact that we already have nine cases at the end of that week is concerning because we don’t know how many people those nine people came into contact with.”
“This is going to spread like wildfire in that school,” he added.
The school “used us as guinea pigs”
Hannah said she was initially suspended for posting the photo. But on Friday, her mother told CNN that the suspension had been reversed. Lynne Watters spoke with the school principal on Friday morning, she said, and was told that her daughter would not be suspended and that a suspension would not appear on her record.
Hannah previously told CNN that she has no regrets for sharing the photo.
On Sunday he said he does not believe the school would have addressed the issue as soon as it did if it had not released the image.
“We could have delayed opening like many other schools,” he said. “They sent us to school and used us as guinea pigs to see what would happen next.”
The sophomore also said she understands that people want the option of learning in school for a variety of reasons, and so does she, but it’s still not safe to go.
“We are all quite worried about going back and I know many of my teachers are too. Because we all want to go to face-to-face classes, ”Hannah said. “I have no intention of closing the county because I know a lot of people don’t learn well online, I don’t learn well online and I want to be able to go to school in person and have some kind of normalcy this year for my semester. But we cannot if we are not safe.
