The Lewotolo erupted on the Indonesian island of Lembata on Sunday, causing panic among the population. The 1,423-meter-high volcano spewed ash, smoke and lava up to three kilometers into the sky, and the government warns that the eruption could cause “hot clouds, lava flows and toxic gas”. “We were all in a panic and are looking for a safe place to stay,” said Indonesian Muhammad Ilham (17), who experienced the natural disaster up close.

The Lewotolo already erupted November 27, spewing ash and smoke some 500 meters into the air, but on Sunday it came to a major eruption. More than 2,700 residents have fled, according to the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Natural Disasters. It is not clear whether there have been any casualties.
Indonesia has more than 170 active volcanoes, making it the leader in the world. The volcanoes are showing a lot of signs of activity, but it can take weeks and even months to erupt. But Lewotolo is already the third Indonesian volcano to erupt in recent weeks, adding to the panic among the population.
