Thor: Love and Thunder, the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), hits theaters on July 6, 2022. But in order to really enjoy the comic adventure with Chris Hemsworth, you should definitely have seen these films.
Three years after his last appearance as the thunder god returns Chris Hemsworth returns to the big screen on July 6 with Thor: Love and Thunder. The Taika Waititi-directed Marvel cracker appears real spectacle full of bizarre humor, cool action and one or the other reunion to become – at least that’s what the trailer and the first enthusiastic critics suggest.
But just like all the other films (and series) of the so-called Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), several narrative strands also come together in “Thor 4”. It’s easy to lose track of things. And that’s why we have all films summarized for you, that you must have seen so that there are no question marks when watching “Thor: Love and Thunder”.

In the meantime, it turns out that Loki (Tom Hiddleston), god of practical jokes, is behind all this. He used a ruse to ensure that Thor, his brother, was banished because he wanted to take the throne of Asgard himself. Now Loki wants to complete his plan and kill the former thunder god. To do this, he sends a so-called Destroyer to Earth. When he destroys a small town, Thor, who has since been purified, sacrifices himself – and thus gets his powers back. He then destroys the Destroyer and defeats Loki. However, he can escape.

In “Thor – The Dark Kingdom” the god of practical jokes is finally in prison in Asgard – until Thor frees him. Because the dark elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) plans to destroy the universe. And without Loki’s help, Thor is no match for the villain. Together with Jane Foster, the brothers finally succeed in defeating the overwhelming enemy.
The smashing of Hydra finally brings Thor back to earth in “Avengers: Age of Ultron”. But just as the Nazi secret organization has been defeated, a new adversary appears on the scene: Ultron (James Spader), an artificial intelligence accidentally developed by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, wants to eradicate humanity. Thor and the other Avengers just about manage to destroy him and save the world.
After defeating Ultron, the Thunder God actually sets out to find out more about the so-called Infinity-Steine find out. Whoever owns all six of them has power over the entire universe. But Thor’s search is abruptly interrupted when Odin dies in “Thor: Day of Decision” and Hela (Cate Blanchett) shows up. Not only is she the ruler of the underworld, but she is also Thor and Loki’s older sister – which is why she now claims the throne of Asgard. In fact, she manages to seize control. And in the end Thor and Loki can only do it with the help of Hulk and Brunnhilde/Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and a ruse. But the price is high. Because Asgard is completely destroyed and its inhabitants are now drifting aimlessly around in the universe.

Avengers: Endgame picks up a few years after Infinity War. The world is still in collective mourning and the Avengers are scattered in all directions. But then Tony Stark/Iron Man finds a way to undo Thanos’ victory. Using a time machine he developed, he and the other Avengers travel back in time and collect the Infinity Stones in front of the Titan. Thanos gets it though. And so it comes to one all decisive battle on earthThe Avengers win though. But in the end they have to pay a high price for victory.

After defeating Thanos, Thor joined the Guardians of the Galaxy to travel the universe and find himself. In this starting position we find the thunder god again in “Thor: Love and Thunder”. His heroic days seem numbered. But then join me Gorr the god slayer (Christian Bale) a new super villain who threatens the universe. Thor stands up to him – and gets surprising help in the form of his ex-girlfriend Jane, who is now known as Mighty Thor has the same powers as the thunder god.
