Thomas Degré, from Paris to New York via Conques

In his latest novel where two plots intertwine and in the unexpected end, the Parisian writer highlights the Aveyron, and in particular Conques-en-Rouergue, the homeland of Chantal, his wife.

Jhad plans. I was planning to leave Paris and my food job soon : barman, in the evening, in a nightclub near the Etoile, to work seriously on my novel-scenario in my country house in Aveyron. These words come out of the novelist imagination of Thomas Degré whose book entitled The lady from nowhere allows readers to travel, from Paris to New York via Conques-en-Rouergue, Royan, Rochefort… The writer’s detour in Aveyron is far from being the result of chance.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, he was 2 years old when he took his first steps in the French capital where he still lives elsewhere – he is now 76 springs. And, it is thanks to Chantal, his wife, that he discovered Aveyron. She is from Conques-en-Rouergue, and more exactly from the place called La Valière, he slips. It’s a place that I really enjoy and really wanted to make it a destination for my character.

There is also the secadou where he comes to recharge his batteries to write, the Auberge Saint-Jacques with farçous, tripous and oil pump, all washed down in moderation with a Marcillac wine …

In short, the plot does not revolve around the culinary or architectural heritage of Aveyron either! It’s before all “a dirty legal story between fiction and reality”. Because, the originality of The lady from nowhere takes place through two plots written in parallel which have, at the start, nothing in common but which end up coming together for a final as captivating as it is unexpected. Thomas Degré obviously had a good time “confusing” the reader to better surprise him.

Thomas Degré will be at the Maison de la presse in Marcillac Vallon, Sunday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., for a signing session. “La demoiselle de nowhere”, published by JDH (17 €) is available in all bookstores, notably in Rodez (Maison du livre), Conques and, of course, Marcillac Vallon (Maison de la presse and Intermarché).
