This year already 162,000 deaths: not much excess mortality since World War II

This is evident from figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Through week 51, an estimated 162,000 people died, about 9.5 percent more than what statisticians had expected.

Coronagolf

During the first corona wave (from week 11 to week 19) the excess mortality was almost 9,000. In the first thirteen weeks of the second wave of corona (week 39 to week 51), 6,100 more people died than you would expect.

This so-called excess mortality can be attributed to Covid-19. Deaths as a result of corona are also reported to RIVM, these figures are often lower than the excess mortality recorded by Statistics Netherlands. Statistics Netherlands’ mortality statistics provide a more complete picture, because not everyone is tested.

Heat wave

Also in weeks 33 and 34, during the heat wave, there were more deaths than usual during that period. In other weeks of 2020, mortality was actually lower than expected.

Last year more than 150,000 people died. The main causes of death were cancer (45,000 patients) and cardiovascular disease (37,000 patients). The cause of death of people who died in the second half of this year is not yet known to Statistics Netherlands.
