This year, 18 people have died at railway crossings, a third more than last year

However, the number of accidents at level crossings has decreased this year. While last year there were 93 of them in the first half of the year, this year drivers, cyclists or pedestrians collided with the train in 57 cases.

However, the consequences of these collisions have worsened significantly. In the first half of last year, 13 people died and 29 were injured. “Although current statistics are already deteriorating compared to the same period last year, it may be even worse during the holidays,” said Railway Inspector spokesman Martin Drápal.

According to him, the months of July and August are long-term risky in the event of accidents at railway crossings. “In these months, we record a higher number of accidents and their consequences,” added Drápal.

In July 2019, the Railway Inspectorate recorded the highest number of deaths at level crossings since 2008. In the first holiday month last year, ten people died in a collision with a train at a level crossing.
